How to: Examples:
Find ALL words or a phrase
Multiple words in one search box are combined with AND. That is, the search looks for ALL words. To search for a phrase, enclose it in quotation marks. If no records are found, try another search without the quotation marks. If no records are found using AND, the system will combine words with OR (look for ANY words).

Phrase: "european union"

ALL words: sociolinguistics symbolism
If no records are found, the search is changed:
Tried: (sociolinguistics and symbolism) no records found...
Tried: (sociolinguistics or symbolism)

Combine Words
You may use AND or OR to find multiple words, any order. Use AND NOT to exclude words. If you use both AND and OR in the same search, put parentheses around words combined with OR! For details and illustrations, see How do I use Boolean Operators?

literature and women
(gender or women) and literature
(americas or "new world") and (migration or diaspora)
laxalt and not robert
Find plurals or any ending on a word
Type an asterisk (*) at the end of a word root.

environment* pollut*
Find one word near another word
Use NEAR to combine words in any order.

center near "basque studies"
Search a specific field
You may specify a field to search, such as: Author, Title, LC (Library of Congress) Subject, or Notes. We recommend using the Advanced Search for complex searches!
